Hello everyone,
Came across many folks complaining of high latency on Jio FTTH. Upon detailed looking for one specific case from a Jio FTTH customer in Ballari, Karnataka. Seems like an issue not even between Jio & outside peers/transit. Possibly IGP costs within the backbone.
CGNAT WAN IPv4 of source for data below: 49.37.171.132
Picking Speedtest.net nodes within Jio's network:
Jio Ballari, Karnataka > speedchn1.jioconnect.com, Jio Chennai - 560km distance
--- speedchn1.jioconnect.com ping statistics --- 5 packets transmitted, 5 packets received, 0% packet loss round-trip min/avg/max = 28.940/29.533/30.226 ms
28ms is pretty high for this distance. 1ms RTT for every 100km + 3-4ms extra for DWDM gear, routers, extra cables etc should result in 7-8ms latency. Trace for the same:
traceroute to speedchn1.jioconnect.com (49.44.56.151), 50 hops max, 64 byte packets 1 192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1) 1.54 ms 1.71 ms 1.69 ms 2 192.168.29.1 (192.168.29.1) 3.20 ms 3.03 ms 2.58 ms 3 10.22.16.1 (10.22.16.1) 4.90 ms 4.88 ms 4.18 ms 4 172.31.2.14 (172.31.2.14) * * * 5 192.168.65.152 (192.168.65.152) * * * 192.168.65.154 (192.168.65.154) 6 172.26.74.5 (172.26.74.5) * * * 7 172.26.77.227 (172.26.77.227) * * * 8 192.168.65.239 (192.168.65.239) * * * 192.168.65.243 (192.168.65.243) 9 192.168.65.242 (192.168.65.242) * * * 192.168.65.244 (192.168.65.244) 10 192.168.73.72 (192.168.73.72) * * * 11 172.16.21.39 (172.16.21.39) * * * 12 172.26.29.47 (172.26.29.47) * * * 13 172.16.21.0 (172.16.21.0) * * * 14 172.16.2.9 (172.16.2.9) * * * 15 172.26.56.138 (172.26.56.138) * * * 16 49.44.56.151 (49.44.56.151) 44.70 ms 31.30 ms 30.60 ms
If I pick a Digital Ocean node in Bangalore, Karnataka and check for latency, I get 7.9ms - much on the expected line and here Digital Ocean is not even connected directly to Jio. --- speedchn1.jioconnect.com ping statistics --- 5 packets transmitted, 5 received, 0% packet loss, time 4005ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 7.886/7.945/8.014/0.121 ms
This high latency issue is not just between Jio Karnataka -> Jio Chennai but also from Karnataka to Mumbai.
Jio Ballari, Karnataka > speed3.jioconnect.com, Jio Navi Mumbai - 761km distance - expected latency 1ms/100Km + 3-4ms additional = 10-12ms. While what one gets:
--- speed3.jioconnect.com ping statistics --- 5 packets transmitted, 5 packets received, 0% packet loss round-trip min/avg/max = 42.068/42.335/42.856 ms
Anyone else also facing such issues of unexpectedly high latency on Jio FTTH?
Also, anyone from Jio's backbone team? Please do contact offlist.
Thanks.
