Re: [sig-policy] prop-064: Change to assignment policy for AS numbers
sorry for spamming - please bear with me for a while. i'll need to go
through this for proposals with major concerns in JP.
There were quite a number of discussions on whether there are no
technical issues/we are ready enough to stop distinguishing 4 byte and
2byte ASNs after Jan 2010.
I know this is outside the scope of this proposal, but quite a number of
concerns were expressed, so I thought I'd share it here.
Moving to the main point, regarding the proposal itself, there were
general support given that distinction between 4 byte and 2 byte ASN
will stop after Jan 2010.
A number of suggestions for imrovements were made as follows:
+ Perhaps, no need to have a phase where people can request for 2 byte
without justification as it doesn't mean much
(most people are likely to request for 2 byte in that case)
+ Distribute until from 2 byte range until it runs out (~AS60000). Once
it does, start distributing from 4 byte range
(that way, operators will prepare by the time of exhaustion of 2 byte
ASN)
