Dear Colleagues,
-------------------------------------------------------------------- prop-042: Proposal to change IPv6 initial allocation criteria -------------------------------------------------------------------- This proposal was presented at the APNIC 23 Policy SIG but failed to reach consensus as opinion was divided on the issue. Therefore, we are returning the proposal to the mailing list for further discussion.
Proposal details ----------------
The proposal suggests removing the need to have a plan to make 200 /48 assignments in two years from the initial IPv6 allocation criteria and replacing it with:
- a plan to make a reasonable number of assignments in two years
Before APNIC 23, an alternative replacement was suggested:
- a plan to make assignments in two years
Discussion at APNIC 23 ----------------------
- Opinion was divided on whether the criteria of a plan to make 200 assignments in two years was preventing LIRs from requesting IPv6 address allocations.
- Of the two possible replacement texts, those who supported changing the criteria preferred the replacement criteria of "a plan to make assignments in two years".
Next steps ----------
We would like to hear your opinions on this proposal. Here are some questions that may help start discussion:
- Is this proposal addressing a real need or problem?
- How do you feel about the points made in the APNIC 23 discussions?
- Do you have any alternative solutions that you feel would be more appropriate?
