prop-043-v001: Proposal to remove reference to IPv6 policy document as an "interim" policy document ________________________________________________________________________
Author: Jordi Palet Martinez, Consulintel
Version: 1
Date: 22 January 2007
SIG: Policy
Introduction ------------ This policy modification is a minor update to the introduction section of the IPv6 Address Allocation and Assignment Policy.
Summary of the current problem ------------------------------ The policy suggest that it is an interim one, however it is not longer the case.
Situation in other RIRs ----------------------- This proposal has also been submitted to the other RIR service regions.
Details ------- The following policy changes are proposed for APNIC-089, "IPv6 Address Allocation and Assignment Policy":
1. Policy document's status as "interim"
Section 1.1 of APNIC-089 states that the policy document is "interim". It is proposed that this statement be removed.
Pros/Cons ---------
There are no advantages or disadvantages as such, but is a clear question of fairness, as it is no longer true that there is a need for greater experience as the current text indicate.
Effect on APNIC --------------- None.
Effect on NIRs -------------- None.

hi Jordi,
The reason why the editorial team of IPv6 policy put "interim" on this document was that we needed more experiences to make it firm as the long-use IPv6 policy at that time.
In that sense, maybe it is the time we remove "interim" from the current 5-6 year-old policy.
But if that case, we should review the whole policy conditions one by one, which means "Revising the policy" with the deep consideration of balancing the conditions, not just removing the word of interim.
With this point of view, your other proposals raised up this time need more detailed analysis to make us understand the effect of changing conditions. I do NOT deny your proposals. But we should be very careful when relaxing the conditions.
regards,
Kosuke

Hi Kosuke,
I perfectly understand the reason behind that text, and totally agree that it was fine at that time. However, I think is the time to remove it.
I don't really think there is a need to review the complete policy, as there have been already, in all the regions, several variations to the original "common" policy.
So my view is that this "review" has been done already in a natural and step by step way.
May be if you have concerns about any specific points in the existing policy, it will be good to openly discuss them ?
Of course, I will expect also you inputs in my other proposals !
Regards, Jordi
