Additional APNIC IPv4 Legacy Space _______________________________________________________________________
Background ----------
Before the establishment of the RIR system, IPv4 delegations were made from a central registry managed by IANA. These delegations were made from "Legacy" /8 blocks as defined in:
http://www.iana.org/assignments/ipv4-address-space/ipv4-address-space. xml
Legacy blocks are now administered by individual RIRs, including the maintenance of whois directory and reverse DNS records. Assignments from these blocks are distributed globally on a regional basis.
RIR discovery of unused space in the Legacy blocks --------------------------------------------------
After the RIRs were given the responsibility to manage the Legacy blocks, a collaborative project amongst the RIRs was initiated to assess whether there was unused space that could be distributed to the RIR's members or customers. This project uncovered approximately 7.5 /8's worth of space in the 53 legacy blocks managed collectively by the RIRs.
The NRO Executive Committee decided that this space should be divided equally amongst the five RIRs. In June 2010, it was agreed that each RIR would receive roughly 1.5 /8s from the unused space in the Legacy blocks.
Unused Legacy space delegated to APNIC --------------------------------------
APNIC prepared its IPv4 address provisioning system to enable distribution from this space after receiving the 1.5 /8s from the Legacy blocks, and the blocks were RQA (Resource Quality Assurance) tested. APNIC is ready to start distributing from this additional space now and public statistics and reporting will be updated accordingly.
